Articulates the role black theatricality played in the radical energy of the sixties Black Performance on the Outskirts of the Left illustrates the black political ideas that radicalized the artistic endeavors of musicians, playwrights, and actors beginning in the 1960s. These ideas paved the way for imaginative models for social transformation through performance. Using the notion of excess—its transgression, multiplicity, and ambivalence—Malik Gaines considers how performances of that era circulated a black political discourse capable of unsettling commonplace understandings of race, gender, and sexuality. Following the transnational route forged by W.E.B. Du Bois, Josephine Baker, and other modern political actors, from the United States to West Africa, Europe and back, this book considers how artists negotiated at once the local, national, and diasporic frames through which race has been represented. Looking broadly at performances found in music, theater, film, and everyday life—from American singer and pianist Nina Simone, Ghanaian playwrights Efua Sutherland and Ama Ata Aidoo, Afro-German actor Günther Kaufmann, to California-based performer Sylvester—Gaines explores how shared signs of racial legacy and resistance politics are articulated with regional distinction. Bringing the lens forward through contemporary art performance at the 2015 Venice Biennial, Gaines connects the idea of sixties radicality to today’s interest in that history, explores the aspects of those politics that are lost in translation, and highlights the black expressive strategies that have maintained potent energy. Black Performance on the Outskirts of the Left articulates the role black theatricality played in the radical energy of the sixties, following the evolution of black identity politics to reveal blackness’s ability to transform contemporary social conditions.

Dr. Walker lays out his program on how to become younger which he partly defines as having all or most of the attributes of youth, health, energy, vitality and perpetual laughter on the lips and in the eyes. The key to accessing both more energy and more vitality lies in changing our eating, drinking, and living habits. Dr. Walker encourages people to develop a very definite philosophy he calls Right Thinking, which is maintaining a positive outlook and positive thoughts about themselves and others. Together with the other principles outlined in his program, he offers readers knowledge that gives them the courage to make the changes necessary. Readers are given a brief yet concise introduction to different parts of our anatomy and how these systems work for and against us, depending upon the food we consume. Dr. Walker recommends changing old eating habits to include natural, nourishing foods. The use of juicing, fasting, and eating natural, organic foods in their unprocessed forms, including mostly raw fruits and vegetables, play an important role in maintaining good health. Through his personal observations, experience, and knowledge, Dr. Walker provides the information needed to stay younger.

"You don't have to accept the 'death sentence' offered by other medical systems," Dr. Morse has told thousands of patients over the years. Since 1972, he has directed a health clinic in Florida, successfully helping people cure themselves of cancer, diabetes, M.S., Crohn's disease, along with both brain and nerve damage. His "miracle" approach is fully detailed in this comprehensive book. The cause of illness is poison (acidosis), i.e., toxins from our food, water and air. No genuine healing can proceed in such a toxified environment. Morse's system is to treat the cause of illness, not the symptoms! The Detox Miracle Sourcebook shows you how to use raw foods and herbs as of the primary means of detoxification, healing, and ultimate regeneration of weak or diseased cells. This book is called a "sourcebook" because of the vast reference material it contains. The author presents a complete overview of every bodily system and every organ. He details the causes of "breakdown" in each system and recommends natural means - raw foods and herbs -- for cleansing, and then strengthening of each part. Comprehensive charts and tables specify the sources for and uses of vitamins, major minerals, trace minerals, cell salts, herbs, fruits and vegetables, essential oils, phytochemicals. His chapters on what to expect as you detoxify are especially valuable. Morse describes the natural "side effects" (from the mild to the extreme) of releasing toxins from the body. He explains in commonsense terms how to encourage this "healing crisis" while at the same time maintaining overall balance in the body. He also offers dramatic accounts of how his own patients have healed themselves of chronic and acute conditions by using these methods. Two detox "miracle" diets are offered as the core of his natural cleansing system. He offers suggestions for the use of fresh juices, recipes for raw foods and a selection of cooked dishes that will gently ease even the timid into the process. Other outstanding features include: lists of the toxic chemicals commonly found in foods, air, water; a massive glossary of medical and nutritional terms; a Resource Guide for where and how to acquire healthy foods, oils, bodycare products, educational materials, etc.; an extensive Bibliography.

Scientists refer to the pineal gland as the "atrophied third eye." Indeed, it, along with the pituitary, is the third eye chakra or energy center, but are more dormant than atrophied. According to Max Heindel's, in the distant past, man was in touch with the inner worlds through an activated pineal and pituitary gland. Considered the most powerful and highest source of ethereal energy available to humans, the third eye has always been important in initiating psychic powers (e.g. clairvoyance and seeing auras). Manly traces the historical significance of the gland and its spiritual value.

The increasing representation of trans identity throughout art and popular culture in recent years has been nothing if not paradoxical. Trans visibility is touted as a sign of a liberal society, but it has coincided with a political moment marked both by heightened violence against trans people (especially trans women of color) and by the suppression of trans rights under civil law. Trap Door grapples with these contradictions. The essays, conversations, and dossiers gathered here delve into themes as wide-ranging yet interconnected as beauty, performativity, activism, and police brutality. Collectively, they attest to how trans people are frequently offered "doors" -- entrances to visibility and recognition -- that are actually "traps," accommodating trans bodies and communities only insofar as they cooperate with dominant norms. The volume speculates about a third term, perhaps uniquely suited for our time: the trapdoor, neither entrance nor exit, but a secret passageway leading elsewhere. Trap Door begins a conversation that extends through and beyond trans culture, showing how these issues have relevance for anyone invested in the ethics of visual culture.
